Direct Robotic Extrusion of Photopolymers (DREPP): Influence of microgravity on an in-space manufacturing method

A method using Direct Robotic Extrusion of Photopolymers (DREPP) to manufacture structures in space a cost- and power-efficient way is presented this article. The DREPP technology has the potential outperform conventional deployable structures, which generally suffer from severe limitations: long high-cost development phases, dimensioning driven by launch loads instead operational loads, mechanical complexity as well constraints maximum structure size due volume limitations on spacecraft. In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) especially AM offer solution circumvent these limitations. Fundamental investigations have already been carried out International Space Station (ISS). Numerous test prints shown that Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) provide satisfactory results under microgravity controlled environmental conditions. With investigated manufacturing process, photoreactive resin robotically extruded through nozzle directly cured UV-light.
